Another step towards public campaign financing of statewide offices in New Mexico took place this morning. The House Voters and Elections Committee voted to pass House Bill 564 by 7 to 5. Chair Jose A. Campos was unfortunately absent for the vote, which is a shame since the majority of his constituents support public financing (according to December 2007 polling data).

Now it's on to House Appropriations and Finance. One major reason we've got this bill and it's progressing so far is the broad public and media pressure on the legislature. Thanks to all who've called their legislators and spoken up in the press. We still need to keep up the heat.

Go here to find contact information for the members of this committee and call your Representative to voice your support of HB 564.  If your Rep is not on the committee then please call Committee Chair Saavedra.
