Rep. Brian K. Moore, R-Clayton is sponsoring HB 180, the Manny Herrera Access to Healthy Foods Act. That's just one of several measures designed to address New Mexico's food gap.

New Mexico ranks second in the nation for food insecurity say advocates for legislation aimed at providing New Mexicans with healthier food.

A summary of food legislation:

SB 207, sponsored by Sen. Pete Campos, D-Las Vegas, and HB 164, sponsored by Rep. Rhonda King, D-Stanley. SB 207 would appropriate $1.44 million for schools to buy more fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables for school lunches.

HB 156 sponsored by Rep. Don L. Tripp, R-Socorro, and SB 49 sponsored by Sen. Carlos Cisneros, D-Questa would provide $28 to 8,000 seniors to buy fresh produce -- .

You can read all about it in this story in today's Santa Fe New Mexican.

good for the community

This legislation could be good for jump-starting community gardens. Ask your city council if there's a city-owned vacant lot with access to water in your community. The city of Bayard donated a big lot , provided water and now has a place to dump leaves and grass-clippings for composting. It's been a slow start, but the local schools are getting interested. If the project succeeds, I envision gardening classes in the public school and using the produce to improve the school lunches and provide health and physical education. Any legislation that supports better school lunches at the local level is a must.
