Posts with the tag Darren White

Last week, the tabloids were abuzz with new Lobos Basketball coach veering away from sports and into the US Congressional race with his scheduled appearance for a Darren White fundraiser.

Then the New Mexico Independent posts a hilariously weird, and somewhat disturbing, music video starring Darren White, sporting a 1980's hairstyle that seemed to have been inspired by the '80s band, "A Flock of Seagulls".

Word has it that the White campaign's strategy was indeed inspired by the title of the group's sole MTV hit, "I Ran So Far Away... (from Bush)."

Here's some predictions for future switch-hitting New Mexican celebrities:

Lobo Football Coach Rocky Long becomes campaign manager for Brian Urlacher, who leaves Chicago to come home and run for Secretary of State. Urlacher agrees to donate part of his football salary to finally get electronic campaign report filing up and running. Campaign slogan: "You break election laws, I break you."

UNM changes plans to build housing near the UNM golf course in favor of a new, 10,000 square foot pub and grill. President David J. Schmidly moonlights as head bartender. "It's easier to meet legislators that way," he says.

Lt. Governor Diane Denish, bored waiting for the 2010 campaign season, starts calling for a legislative special session on cockfighting, domestic partnerships and tilapia farming. "Watching the Senate is much more fun than raising money," she offers.

Marty Chavez tries desperately to reinvent himself as an ethics and environmental champion (oh wait, that one's actually happening).
It's not news. State Senator Mark Boitano is a member of the Unification Church - a Moonie. But a new book on the Reverend Sun Myung Moon includes a account of a 1979 incident involving the Albuquerque lawmaker that may be news to lot of people in New Mexico.

The book's title says it all: Bad Moon Rising - How Reverend Moon Created The Washington Times, Seduced the Religious Right, and Built an American Kingdom. The author, John Gorenfeld, has been reporting on Moon for years and exposed the story behind the 2004 Capitol Hill party at which Moon had himself and his wife coronated as "King and Queen of America." Boitano was there. Lobbyist Charlie Black, John McCain's chief political advisor, was on the coronation host committee.

Jim Scarantino covered the Boitano story back in a 2005 in a well-researched Weekly Alibi piece, The Messiah's Senator. He wrote:

"The Honorable Mark Boitano, state senator, New Mexico" was listed as a member of the invitation committee. In an e-mail exchange last week, Boitano wrote, "Reverend Moon is the most remarkable person I've ever met--he deserves every bit of recognition he receives."

But now here's something rather startling, this passage on pages 159-160 of Gorenfeld's new book:   Read More »

State party GOP insiders, including party chair, Alan Weh, threatened one Republican congressional candidate, and forced two others out of the CD1 race with threats of sliming, according to veteran reporter Dennis Domrzalski in his blog today. The smear campaign was undertaken to aid the candidacy of Bernalillo County Sheriff Darren White.

The Attorney General's office is looking into the allegations.

Saturday's GOP congressional debate between Darren White and Joe Carraro is being closed to the media. Candidates will be more "candid" with party insiders if the press is excluded, according to party spokesman, Rory Ogle.
Joe Monahan reported this new development on his blog this morning.

Santa Fe New Mexican reporter, Kate Nash, originally broke the story about the debate in her blog.

A curious aspect of this story is that it highlights the increasing visibility of Ogle, a former Republican state representative (District 28, Bern) as a spokesman for GOP party insiders.

Many will recall that it was Ogle who resigned from the legislature in 2004 after being arrested and charged with aggravated battery on a household member and domestic violence. It was reported that he picked up a twin bed headboard and threw it at his wife, seriously injuring her right hand.
